Footprints Family Sign up for Fairtrade Fortnight

Footprints Family Progress - February 2009

In the run up to Fairtrade Fortnight (23 February - 8 March 2009) the Hicklings have been finding out more about this year's campaign, 'Make It Happen'. With the snow finally gone, the family enjoyed a family bike ride to a Fairtrade shop in Coalville run by local campaigner, Lynda Durcan. The Hicklings were treated to a Fairtrade afternoon tea, sampling Fairtrade tea, coffee, chocolate biscuits and even fruit cake. They then had the chance to browse the shelves and choose a selection of items. Clare, Erin and Isaac picked fair-trade pasta, tea, flapjacks, chocolate and even found some award-winning strawberry jam.

Clare said: “We’ve learned a lot today. I knew that Fairtrade guarantees a higher price for the product in developing countries, but I hadn’t realised that money also goes in to that community to help develop local healthcare, introduce clean water supplies or improve local schools.”

“And I hadn’t realised what a huge selection of fairly traded items are available to buy – it’s not just tea, coffee and bananas. We’ve been very impressed and yes, we’re going to help ‘Make it Happen’ and have selected Fairtrade items today.”
