The shortlisted groups:

Prince's Trust '12 Days of Christmas'

This group of 11 young people aged between 16-25 years old selected to “do 12 positive things” for local groups as part of their Prince’s Trust programme. One part of the challenge was to attempt 12 litter picks in one day across North West Leicestershire in the run up to Christmas. The team started early in the morning at Castle Donington, then moved on to clear four sites in Ashby and finished with a further four sites in Coalville. The group braved the cold weather but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, which resulted in an impressive 30 large sacks of litter weighing nearly half a tonne by the end of the day.

VIP – Holly Hayes Wood

A core group of six young people from the VIP (Volunteering, Internships and Partnership) programme worked alongside six volunteer members at the 64 acre Holly Hayes Wood near Whitwick on this six week project. The group of young people aged 16-18 were taught woodwork skills to help manage pathways and construct interpretation panels. They also learned about habitat management and creation, including planning to improve the area for the resident kingfishers. The project helped the young people gain valuable project management and practical skills and promoted the value of volunteering within the local community.

VIP – Snibston Young Rangers

This VIP project has provided a safe haven for over 150 young people over the past two years. The Rangers Service and Youth Service have provided a regular base from the group learn about environmental education, awareness and action. The Young Rangers is a highly committed group dedicated to environmental conservation in their local area, so much so that they have organised non-uniform days at their schools, raising over £700 to put back into the project. The project has enabled the young people to gain nationally recognised awards and helped reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

And the winner is: VIP SNIBSTON YOUNG RANGERS

Paige McWilliams with other members of the VIP Snibston Young Rangers and group leaders (Leicestershire County Council rangers) receive their award from sponsor Nigel Leigh, Principal of Stephenson College.
