Why Save Water?

Man with Umbrella

Well, the Met Office got it wrong and umbrella sales, rather than barbeque sales, have probably gone up. With all this recent wet weather you are probably wondering why on earth you are being asked to take part in Waterwise Week.

There are three main reasons.

1. It may feel like it rains all the time but recent research from the Environment Agency shows that the UK has less available water per person than most other European countries. London is drier than Istanbul and the South of England has less water available per person than the Sudan and Syria. The UK has the second highest population density in Europe after the Netherlands. Simply put, there are lots of people using a limited water supply so the less we waste the better.

2. And then there is the environmental impact of pumping all that water around. The water industry is one of our most energy hungry industries. First of all water has to be collected from reservoirs, rivers and groundwater sources. It has to be pumped, treated and then pumped again into our homes and work places. This requires a huge amount of energy, which results in high carbon dioxide emissions.

3. You can save money. Heating water makes up about 25% of your home energy bill so you can make good savings if you reduce the amount of water you use. Being water efficient can potentially halve your hot water use, saving you 12% off your bill. And if you're already on a water meter, you can make even bigger savings.

By taking part in Waterwise Week, you are helping to conserve precious water resources, do your bit for the environment and you'll even save money.
